RECOVERING
SCRIPTURE

reclaiming the bible for lgbtq+ liberation

Fall 2020

Hosted by Labyrinth Progressive Student Ministry, the Episcopal Student Center, the Episcopal Counseling Center, and UKirk

what we're talking about

Every Tuesday for five weeks, we’ll look at a different scripture that’s been used to exclude LGBTQ+ people from the church, examining what the text really says, its historical context, and how we might interpret it from a lens of liberation. Each week is led by a different minister, and counselors from the Episcopal Counseling Center will be present each week.

Week 1: Genesis 19

Led by Rev. Anna Strickland (she/her) of Labyrinth Progressive Student Ministry

Week 2: Leviticus + Deuteronomy

Led by Rev. Travis Helms (he/him) of the Episcopal Student Center

Week 3: Romans

Led by Rev. Natalie Webb (she/her) of University Baptist Church

Week 4: 1 Corinthians + 1 Timothy

Led by Julia Burkley (she/her) of UKirk

Week 5: Genesis 2

Led by René Slataper (he/him) of Labyrinth Progressive Student Ministry

What to expect

This study is for all students who are interested in reading and interpreting the bible through a lens of liberation, particularly in regards to gender and sexuality. Students of any/all/no faith, gender, sexuality, and experience with the bible are welcome.

Yes! All of the participating ministries are 100% LGBTQ+ affirming with many members and leaders that identify as LGBTQ+. If anything comes up during the study, a counselor from the Episcopal Counseling Center will be on site to talk with you.

Ministers from the sponsoring organizations will take turns leading our conversations. They represent four different denominations in the Christian tradition: Baptist, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and United Church of Christ. Click to learn more about each of them:

No, we’ll read the text together, and we’ll have bibles if you want to read along. Just bring your curiosity!

No problem! Each week is self-contained, so you won’t be behind on anything. We’d love to see you any weeks that you’re able to come!

Masks are required in the lounge for everybody. We recommend being fully vaccinated before attending in person for everyone’s safety, but we are not checking vaccination cards for entry.
